How To Switch Infant Formulas

We know switching infant formula can be confusing and stressful, but we’re here to help. Here are some tips to help you make the switch as smoothly as possible.

As always, we recommend consulting your pediatrician if you have any questions about your baby's specific nutritional needs.

  1. Start with the first feed, if possible: When starting a new formula, offer the new formula for the first feed or when your baby is most hungry. This will allow you to monitor them throughout the day.

  2. Monitor your baby: Observe their digestion, stools, gas, spit-up, and mood over the next few days. Some change is normal (gas, loose stools) but persistent severe issues (rash, hives, bloody stools, extreme vomiting) are not.

  3. Be patient: It may take 7-10 days for the baby to adjust to the formula, fussiness is normal as they transition. Some babies (especially older ones) might reject the new taste or smell of the formula initially. Be patient.

  4. Be consistent: Try to keep all other changes minimal during the transition. Avoid introducing new foods or other feeding changes. Additionally, switching formulas multiple times quickly may confuse the baby’s digestive system and make it hard to tell what’s causing any change in digestion.

  5. Stay calm: Stick with your normal feeding times and routines, your baby will adapt with you.
